Checklist

Government Publications and Documents

For journal students, this suggested order of the checklist is based on Bluebook rules that often state a preference for certain formats when citing materials. Make sure to follow the Bluebook rules or your journal’s cite checking policies.

This suggested order is based on trying to find recreations of the print treaty online, then moving to ILL.

  1. Check GovInfo.gov
  2. Check HeinOnline
  3. Check Agency Website
  4. Check Catalog of U.S. Government Publications
  5. Check Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications
  6. Check USA.gov
  7. Used Google Advanced Search
  8. Use this form for ILL

Below is more explanation about the sources in the checklist above.

GovInfo.gov

GovInfo.gov

Provides some access to PDF versions of U.S. government documents.

HeinOnline

HeinOnline

A good place to start would be "U.S. Federal Agency Documents, Decisions, and Appeals." After selecting, it may be easiest to "Browse by Agency."

Catalog of U.S. Government Publications

Catalog of U.S. Government Publications

Provides indexes to print and electronic publications produced by federal agencies. It will provide links to PDF documents or a SuDoc number that can be used to verify if the item is available in the Law Library. You'll likely want to start by selecting the advanced search tab at the top of the page or above the search bar. From there, you can search by title, author, etc. Note that the search refreshes every time so if you change the search from keyword, you'll have to reselect each time.

Search results:

If you find a result that looks promising, you should open it, this will show you a record of the resource, including information such as title, author, and more. In the example below, I have pointed out the author and the SuDoc number, which are excellent pieces of information to start with to verify the resource.

Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications

Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications

Indexes U.S. government publications and PDFs of those from 1895-2004 and can be found on HeinOnline in "U.S. Federal Agency Documents, Decisions, and Appeals" under "Monthly Catalog of United States Government Public."

USA.gov

USA.gov

Connects citizens to federal, state, local, and tribal government information. Users can browse information by topic, governmental entity, governmental services, and more. USA.gov also provides access to a searchable Agency Index to all federal agencies, which can be found under the "About the U.S. and it's government" tab.
