Statutes are subject to frequent revision so it is always recommended you check for flags and signals that indicate if there is legislation pending.

You can often check below the text of a statute or regulation to find the history or credits section where past changes are listed in chronological order. These can then be used to determine whether older cases were looking at the same version of the section's text.

Proposed and final regulations are published daily in the Federal Register. Final regulations are codified in the Code of Federal Regulations on an annual, quarterly basis. Databases like Lexis and Westlaw will have notes indicating when the CFR language was updated. Another good alternative is to use the eCFR which updates the CFR of a weekly basis.
